Flores and Tikal – Welcome to Guatemala

How time flies. I just arrived in Guatemala. More than 3 months in and Guatemala is my fifth country. What did I know about Guatemala before arriving. Pretty much nothing. I’m not big on research. I tend to go with the flow and usually you meet lots of people that tell you what the places to see are when you get there. It was no different here. I started in Flores. Flores is just over the western border from Belize. There is the city of Santa Elena and her smaller sister island city connected by a causeway – Flores. Both are on the 2nd largest lake in Guatelama, Lake Peten…

Caye Caulker – a small paradise off the coast of Belize

I was a little nervous about travelling to a new country after spending a month in Mexico. You would think that you are less nervous the longer you travel. This is true for me for travelling within a country, but every time I travel to a new country I get nervous all over again. There are 2 ways to travel from Mexico to Belize or better Caye Caulker in Belize. You can either take a ferry to Chetumal and catch a ferry to Caye Caulker that also stops at San Pedro. This is the more expensive option, so I decided to cross the border with the bus and take a…

Mahahual and Bacalar – Turtles, Cruise Ships and the Lagoon of Seven Colors

For the next stop after Tulum I chose a little fisher town called Mahahual. Not so long ago, Mahahual was nothing more than a few beach huts and the Mexican Navy base. Now it has a cruise ship port that brings thousands of people to this little town every year. I had fun watching the cruise ship guests every day decending onto Mahahual. Most of them would sit themselves on the beach or cafes/restaurants and continue to do what they do on the boat which is eat and drink. By the afternoon the people would head back to the boats and Mahaual turned back into a quite little village. My…

Tulum – Time to stand still, reflect, heal and let go

My first thoughts about Tulum were: ‘Get me out of here’. I didn’t like it at all and was ready to move on quickly, but somehow I ended up staying for 11 days. Isn’t it funny how these things go. It was a good time for me to slow down and stay longer in a place when just a few days. I was lucky to find a quiet and comfortable hostel (Las Tres Palmas) where it was easy to stay for longer. There are really two parts to Tulum. You have the main drag along the highway where you find tourist shops everywhere, but also cheaper accommodation and food. The…

Merida – Cenotes and Mayan Ruins

My next stop in Mexico was Mérida. It wasn’t on my initial itinerary, but one of my couchsurfing hosts told me it is worth a visit and Holbox, where I was before, wasn’t to far away. Somehow I also had a good feeling about going to Mérida. I have started to listen more and more to my gut feeling while travelling. I ask myself do I want to go to a certain place and when if it feels right I go if not I’ll skip it. So far it’s been working well for me. Mérida is the capital and largest city in Yucatan state, as well as the largest city…
