Exploring Honolulu and surrounds (Oahu Part 1)

Next stop on my trip through Hawaii was Oahu. I call it the main island, because most international flights fly to Honolulu and Waikiki is one if not the most touristy place in all Hawaii. I was a little skeptical about Oahu before my arrival. I thought Oahu might not be the best place to go. All you hear is how touristy it is, but personally I quite enjoyed my 2-week stay in Oahu. Yes Waikiki is a main tourist hub, but the island has some amazing beaches and many activities and places to look at. I arrived on the 30th December, so there were people/tourists everywhere and accommodation was…

    Road-tripping on Maui

I spent the last few days of 2018 on Maui. The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles (1,883 km2). I had the pleasure to stay with a friend of a friend in Haiku. I had such a lovely time staying with Z. She has a nice house in a small development. It was pure luxury for me because I had my own bed, my own room and even my own bathroom. It’s a big step up from staying in a tent or sleeping on the floor. But more importantly it was so nice hanging out with Z and her animals. She has…

Exploring the Hilo area and sunset on Maunakea

Aloha from Crispy Cream on Maui. You’ve gotta love the traveller’s life. I’ve only been on the road for just over 2 weeks and my plans had to be changed multiple times. The reason I’m sitting at Crispy Creme today, writing a blog post, is that I missed my bus 2 days ago in Kona. I wrote about it in my last post. It was too hard to get back to Hilo, so I rebooked my flight and I arrived in Maui earlier than planned. My car wasn’t available when I arrived at the car company, so now I’m passing time at Crispy Cream. But let’s get to the real…

The story about a missed bus and a forgotten bag

This is a little story about how I almost lost my bag. I’m still on the Big Island. Yesterday was Christmas eve. I had spent most of the day with some friends. We had driven from Hilo which is on the east side of the island to Kona on the west side. The plan was to take a bus back at night. May I point out that the bus system here is terrible and there is only one bus in the morning and one bus at night. So long and behold we set off for me to catch the bus back to Hilo. Problem number one; where is the bus…

Mauna Loa, couch surfing and swimming with the dolphins

Last week I decided to rent a car and tour the island. I had just finished my first week of working in the garden and I felt the urge to get out and explore. The Big Island is 4,028 mi² and it takes about 5h to drive around it. I had 2 days. There is also a road that goes right through the center, but I decided against it because I wanted to see as much as possible. The island is actually quite amazing. You have 2 sides. The Kona side and the Hilo side. My work-away was on the Hilo side. That side sees a lot more rain because of the…
